Greetings from Harry R. Gibbs, MD
As the Board Chair of the Texas Diversity Council, I would like to welcome you to this edition of the Texas Diversity Council quarterly newsletter. I hope that you have found this to be a valuable venue for information regarding the Council’s activities.
There is a saying that has been attributed (probably erroneously) to the Chinese which goes something like, “May you live in interesting times”. Whether this is a blessing or a curse is not clear. What is clear is that, in the arena of diversity and inclusion, we truly are living in interesting times...

Diversity and inclusion is a top priority for KPMG because it influences everything we do, from recruiting to career building to the services we deliver to our clients, and all activities in between.
Success with any significant opportunity requires that we apply a diverse mix of skills, viewpoints, and experiences. Accordingly, we work hard every day to advance our diversity strategy and ensure an inclusive work environment that is supportive of all individuals. The firm began this journey several years ago with a focus on improving the work environment for women, and we're proud of the great distance we've traveled. Key to our success has been the creation of an effective organizational structure that helps us execute our diversity strategy at all levels of the firm.

The Texas Diversity Council held its annual event in four markets across the state, which included participants with diverse ethnicities, backgrounds and experiences, in order to share best practices in the areas of diversity and inclusion. It is also a time to recognize individuals and corporations for their leadership, achievement, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

This year's annual North Texas Women's Summit was affirmation of the success and significance of another well-attended event. Our theme was "Purpose, Passion and Performance – A New Era!". Our moderator, keynote speaker and esteemed panelists all shared their experiences, knowledge and insight to expertly demonstrate and reinforce the theme with their comments, quotes and quips.

Preparation is an invaluable tool when it comes to building one’s professional success. With the proper guidance, young individuals entering the work force can make incredible strides toward their professional goals. With this is mind, we launched the College Tours initiative, which will help prepare college students to transition from college to the corporate environment.

In some of my previous newsletters, we spoke about the admirable work ethic of first generation, front line Hispanics in the workplace. They come to work ready to roll up their sleeves and keep the production lines running at whatever capacity is required. This strong work ethic is even more pronounced when they are new at the job.
