2015 Texas Diversity Council Healthcare Diversity Summit Statewide Tour

Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. We have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural dimensions of our community.

While some gains have been made in regards to increasing diversity in the field of health care management, recent studies continue to suggest that there is still ample room for improvement. With recent changes to our National Health Care System as well as the changing demographics in our country, there is an urgent need to understand the importance of healthcare organizations providing a culturally competent framework to serve such a diverse population.

The Healthcare Summit aims to provide a forum for dialogue and awareness. Our main goal is to assist in creating knowledge as to how to build an organizational culture and workforce that is culturally competent and inclusive. It is our vision to begin the transformation that will drive organizations to become culturally competent as they contribute to eliminate health disparities. The panel sessions for this year are “Many Faces: Addressing Diversity in Healthcare” and “Painting with a Broad Brush: One size does not fit all.”

The tour began with the Greater Dallas Healthcare Diversity Summit on July 10th, 2015 at UT Southwestern Center in Dallas, Texas. Ildemaro Gonzalez, Vice President and Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer, Parkland Health System provided the Keynote Remarks. Panelists included: Archie Drake, Chief Executive Officer, Forest Park Medical Center; Mina Kini, Senior Director, Multicultural & Community Health, Texas Health Resources; Pamela Bryant, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain, BaylorScott & White Health; Tiffany Love, PhD APRN GNP ANP-BC CCA, Deputy Associate Director of Patient Care Services, Overton Brooks VA Medical Center; and Moderator Kimel U. Hodges, MSA, CDE, Assistant VP, Equal Opportunity and Minority Affairs, UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dallas was followed by Greater San Antonio, which was held on August 5, 2015 at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Providing the keynote remarks was Francisco González-Scarano, MD, Dean, School of Medicine, Vice President for Medical Affairs, Professor of Neurology, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Panelists included: Judy Woo, M.D., Medical Director, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, City of San Antonio; Janie Canty-Mitchell, PhD, RN, Professor and Chairman, Department of Family & Community Health Systems, University of Texas Health Sciences Center San Antonio; Nancy Ray, RN, Senior Vice President/Chief Nurse Executive, University Health System; and Moderator, Angeles Valenciano, President and EVP, National Diversity Council.
